Coming from the defiant spirit of the Sydney, Australia punk scene, Orange Chorus Blonde Reveal is the début set from gi (aka Gigi De Lacy) that finds organic beauty and mechanical grit in the grey zones between ambient, techno, and IDM.  Originally released on cassette by Altered States Tapes in 2023, the collection now receives a vinyl edition courtesy of Unheard of Hope.  “Through extensive sampling, editing, and arrangement,” gi explains, “I based each piece on phone videos taken in day-to-day life.”  Building on that foundation, she weaves in elements of guitar and harmonium, and builds glitchy, kinetic rhythms around the heart of each track. “Sonically, I want these pieces to make as much sense to punks as they do to warehouse kids,” she notes.

This eclecticism courses through “cipher”, as lilting strings (performed by collaborator Abby Sundborn) build beneath swirling electronic ephemera, wall-rattling bass, and a tense atmosphere that whirrs and stretches across the stereo field.  “bashing” hints at avowed influences like Alva Noto and Mika Vainio, but injects a uniquely human undercurrent: rhythmic elements flutter and circulate chaotically before falling into a mesmerizing, midtempo groove, anchored by soft drones, mutated field recordings, and ring modulated harmonies.

gi is part of the fertile Sydney underground, where the political repression and exorbitant cost of the city has led to temporary spaces and makeshift venues where electronic and punk communities frequently overlap. “I grew up going to DIY shows where there would be like a hardcore or noise group followed by live techno followed by post punk or a drum ‘n bass DJ,” she notes, “and I’m most inspired when everything overlaps and nothing is discrete, when everyone is unified by the pure impulse to make things happen on our own terms.”
